This Privacy Policy statement discloses the type of information that the Student Opportunity Center, Inc. (“Student Opportunity Center”, “SOC”, or “we”), collects and/or stores about our Users, our usage policy, and who to contact with questions and/or concerns that you may have.

Student Opportunity Center is committed to the responsible use and management of the personal information of its registered users (“User” or “Users” or “you”) and aspires to abide by all prevailing rules, both ethical and legal, with respect to the use of such information. We strictly adhere to all industry standard guidelines, and are continuously monitoring and enhancing how we manage the use and security of your information.

By utilizing the Student Opportunity Center’s technology (both individual Users and Student Opportunity Center Client Schools), that Student Opportunity Center Client School and individual User hereby consents and agrees that they have entered into a legally binding agreement with Student Opportunity Center, and that school’s department, staff and administrators will have the ability to access personal information from the Student Opportunity Center Site belonging to students and alumni of the respective schools. This access may include, without limitation, the ability to send emails to Users and view User first name, last name, major, minor, and the biography provided by the User in the User profile page.

Although bound by the terms of this agreement with Student Opportunity Center, Student Opportunity Center Client School departments, and the activities and practices of their own staff and administrators are not subject to this Privacy Policy with respect to their own students, and Student Opportunity Center is not responsible for how they use or what they do with personal information about that school’s students or alumni which may be available and/or accessible to them on or through the Student Opportunity Center licensed technology. If you have specific questions regarding the privacy practices and policies of your school with respect to your personal information, we recommend that you contact your Student Opportunity Center Client School directly.

Data is encrypted at several levels. Student Opportunity Center forces HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) for all transmissions between users and web services. Service-to-service communications are, by default, encrypted by Google Cloud.

Student Opportunity Center core services comply with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children’s education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are “eligible students.”

Parents or eligible students have the right to inspect and review the student’s education records maintained by the school. Schools are not required to provide copies of records unless, for reasons such as great distance, it is impossible for parents or eligible students to review the records. Schools may charge a fee for copies.

Parents or eligible students have the right to request that a school correct records which they believe to be inaccurate or misleading. If the school decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student then has the right to a formal hearing. After the hearing, if the school still decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student has the right to place a statement with the record setting forth his or her view about the contested information.

Generally, schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to release any information from a student’s education record. However, FERPA allows schools to disclose those records, without consent, to the following parties or under the following conditions (34 CFR § 99.31):

  • School officials with legitimate educational interest;
  • Other schools to which a student is transferring;
  • Specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes;
  • Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student;
  • Organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school;
  • Accrediting organizations;
  • To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena;
  • Appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies;
  • State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific State law.

Schools may disclose, without consent, “directory” information such as a student’s name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However, schools must tell parents and eligible students about directory information and allow parents and eligible students a reasonable amount of time to request that the school not disclose directory information about them. Schools must notify parents and eligible students annually of their rights under FERPA. The actual means of notification (special letter, inclusion in a PTA bulletin, student handbook, or newspaper article) is left to the discretion of each school.

To the extent that SOC receives from Organization or otherwise has access to, on behalf of Organization, personally identifiable information from a student education record (collectively, Student Records), SOC agrees to maintain such Student Records in accordance with the requirements of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, 20 USC § 1232g, and its implementing regulations, 34 CFR pt. 99, as each may be amended from time to time (collectively FERPA). Organization agrees (i) that SOC is performing for the Organization an institutional service or function for which the Organization would otherwise use its employees, (ii) that the Organization will retain control over all education records provided to SOC, and (iii) that the Organization is responsible for complying with FERPA, including with respect to the annual notification requirement (34 C.F.R. § 99.7) and with respect to providing Student Records to SOC. Organization will indemnify, defend and hold harmless SOC and its Personnel from any and all third party claims, liabilities, and expenses arising from Organization’s breach of its obligations.
